• The 18th century headstones of Denis Cullen

Some of the most remarkable headstones from 18th century Ireland were carved by Denis Cullen of Monaseed, Co. Wexford. Over 120 examples of Cullen's headstones are known, and though his workshop was in Wexford, most of his work ended up in neighbouring Co. Wicklow. His work spans the 1750s to about 1790. He was particularly well known for his figurative carvings of the crucifixion of Christ. For further information see my paper in the most recent the Irish Arts Review - Autumn 2012. See also my slide show and flickr for some additional images of Cullen's work.
